While many may think this is the best time of year you may want to consider the downside of the holidays It s also heart attack season December and January are the deadliest months for heart disease Doctors say it s not uncommon for people to initially shrug off chest pain as indigestion Research also shows that they re even more reluctant to run to the emergency room when it means disrupting a holiday gathering Doctors say watch your salt and alcohol intake and remember to exercise and watch what you eat
You may want to think twice before overindulging on food this holiday season Thanksgiving to New Year s can be a slippery slope for many Studies have shown that seasonal weight gain can be significant sometimes up to 10 pounds Doctors suggest making a plan of action and visualizing meals beforehand Decide what you can and cannot eat and remember to fill up on small portion sizes
A new study out shows that 50 percent of adults don t get a colonoscopy a screening test for colon cancer That s despite a government recommendation that all people over 50 years old get one A colonoscopy can also test for rectal cancer polyps and small clumps of cells that can become cancerous
The number of people infected with the AIDS virus may be higher than what s reported Advocacy groups say at least 35 percent more Americans are infected than what the government has been issuing Government officials acknowledge they re revising the number U S health officials have been estimating about 40 thousand new HIV cases occur each year Advocates believe the new estimate is 55 thousand or higher Estimates on new infections help health officials decide how much to spend on prevention programs
