Senate approves stem cell research bill

A CONTROVERSIAL BILL TO FUND EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH IN NEW MEXICO IS HALFWAY TO THE GOVERNOR S DESK FOR SIGNING INTO LAW IT CLEARED THE STATE SENATE BY A NARROW VOTE–AFTER NEARLY TWO HOURS OF INTENSE DEBATE RAY SEVA HAS THE STORY FROM THE STATE CAPITOL BY A NARROW TWO- VOTE MARGIN A BILL TO FUND EMBRYONIC STEM-CELL RESEARCH AT U-N-M HAS PASSED THE SENATE SUPPORTERS OF THE BILL–SPONSORED BY ALBUQUERQUE STATE SENATOR JOHN RYAN–SAY THE RESEARCH COULD UNLOCK CURES FOR DISEASES SUCH AS ALZHEIMERS PARKINSONS DIABETES AND MANY TYPES OF CANCER These are the monsters that have stopped humanity since the beginning of time And I think this bill truly creates the possibility to destroy some of these monsters BUT CRITICAL SENATORS SAY USING EMBRYOS ISN T NECESSARY BECAUSE CURRENT ADULT STEM CELL RESEARCH IS ALREADY UNDERWAY These stem cells have provided so many cures and promise of cures Embryonic stem cells haven t provided anything OTHER SENATORS ARGUE IT WOULD BE NO DIFFERENT THAN PERFORMING ABORTIONS My church believes as I do that an embryo is a human It s a little baby It s already been formed BUT SUPPORTERS ARGUE THE BILL ONLY AUTHORIZES THE USE OF EMBRYOS ABOUT TO BE DISCARED BY FERTILITY CLINICS They re going to be destroyed in any case Society and human kind might benefit from research done THE BILL NOW HEADS OVER TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES LAST YEAR A SIMILAR BILL NEVER MADE IT HERE TO THE FLOOR FOR A VOTE AND MANY HOUSE LEADERS PREDICT AN EVEN TOUGHER DEBATE AT THE
